Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (CATS)

Our Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (CATS) is designed for people for whom physiotherapy is not appropriate. This could be for a number of reasons; it could be that their physiotherapy treatment has not been successful, or that their diagnosis is unclear and they need further, more specialist intervention. The CATS service can also order diagnostic tests, such as MRI scans or X-rays if appropriate.

Advanced Practitioner Physiotherapists (APPs)

Advanced practitioner Physiotherapists (APPs) are Physiotherapists working at a high level of expertise who have advanced knowledge and skills in specialised clinical areas. Advanced practitioners in addition to Physiotherapists could include other professions such as Podiatrists, Occupational Therapists (OT) working in advanced practice roles with advanced knowledge and skills in their specialist area. To achieve this, an Advanced Practitioner must undergo advanced post graduate training and qualifications thorough universities and work based learning beyond their basic undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy.  Advanced Practitioner Physiotherapists, OTs and Podiatrists will work to standards as set out in British law and regulated by the Health Care & Professions Council (HCPC).

APPs specialise in a number of treatments, including:

  • Advanced rehabilitation
  • Injection therapy
  • Cognitive behavioural therapies
  • Prescribing medicines to treat MSK conditions
  • Knowledge on referrals for surgery, advanced complex medical conditions and post-surgery

General Practitioner with Special Interest (GPwSI)

A GPwSI supplements their role as a generalist by providing an additional specialist service while still working in the community. They help improve clinical services for patients by reducing delays in treatment, improving access and keeping assessment, diagnosis and treatment closer to a patient’s home.

GPwSIs specialise in a number of treatments, including:

  • Injection therapy
  • Prescribing medicines to treat MSK conditions
  • Knowledge on referrals for surgery, advanced complex medical conditions and post-surgery aftercare

What does ‘musculoskeletal’ mean?

The term ‘musculoskeletal’ (often shortened to MSK) refers to the body’s joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves and any other structures that support the limbs, neck and back. You have been referred to the service because of an injury to one of these areas.

Why have I been referred to Connect and not the NHS?

In your area, Connect has been contracted to provide the MSK service on behalf of the NHS. It is an NHS service, completely free at the point of entry like all NHS services.

Our service brings together a range of specialist MSK clinicians to assess, diagnose and manage your condition within your local community.

What should I expect from my appointment?

Depending on your condition, your first appointment may be a scheduled telephone consultation with a physiotherapist or a face to face appointment. At the initial appointment you will be asked questions regarding your symptoms, activities, work, previous medical history etc.

If this is over the phone you may then be booked to see a physiotherapist, an Advanced Practitioner Physiotherapist (APP), a clinician with specialist orthopaedic or pain expertise or a GP with Special Interest (GPwSI).  This is to complete the assessment and decide on the best management plan for you.

Your treatment plan will be discussed with you and may include a variety of  treatment options, to help you to return to your usual activities. Your treatment plan will also include advice and specific exercises to help you to self-manage your condition.

What if I have special requirements?

  • Patients under 18: If the Patient is under 18, then please advise us when you book their appointment, as some of our services may only be available to Adults.
  • Patients with additional needs: If the Patient is vulnerable, or has a disability, or mobility problems, then please advise us when you book their appointment.
  • Transport: If you require hospital transport, please advise us when you book your appointment. Please note that transportation is not provided with some Hospitals.
  • Translation Support: If you require a translator, please advise us which language you require when you book your appointment.

What should I wear?

During your assessment you might be required to carry out a number of movements to determine the cause of your pain. Therefore we recommend you wear suitable loose fitting clothing, such as t-shirt, shorts, jogging bottoms and underwear that you are comfortable being assessed in.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Please bring to the appointment any recent prescriptions and/or a list of current medications.

What if I need Diagnostic Tests?

  • During your treatment, you may be referred for Diagnostic tests such as Blood-Samples, X-Ray, CT-Scans, MRI Scans etc.
  • You may be required to attend a walk-in clinic, or we may request the test for you.
  • Diagnostic tests may take up to 8 weeks to receive the results
  • We monitor your progress throughout the diagnostic process, so there is no need to call us earlier than 8 Weeks after you have attended your appointment.
