On arrival

Enter through the main entrance and turn left. Register your name with receptionist and take a seat in the waiting area. When the clinician is ready, they will collect you from the waiting area and take you to the treatment room.

If the main car park is full, you should be able to park in the surrounding streets. However, please remember to check for any restrictions, as we cannot be held responsible for any fine incurred.

Please note that clinic days at this venue rotate regularly to provide a wider choice for our patients.

Practice based physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for MSK conditions involves the assessment and treatment of muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, spinal discs, nerves and other structures to keep you moving.

It covers a number of different techniques including manipulation and mobilisation, massage, hydrotherapy, exercise programmes, electrotherapy, and in some cases acupuncture.

Group classes

In addition to 1-to-1 sessions with clinicians, patients can be seen in group setting for either Exercise Classes or for Educational Seminars (this will be specific to each location). If an Exercise Class or Educational Seminar is appropriate for your condition, your clinician will discuss this with you as a possible option for your ongoing care. Exercise Classes are run by Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation Therapists and/or Physiotherapy Assistants and with a set programme of exercises that help patients progress to gain strength, flexibility, or muscle control to enable patients to self-manage their conditions. Educational Seminars are information sessions where a Physiotherapist will provide information to a group of patients on a certain topic such as lower back pain and tips on coping and self-management.

Clinicians and patients discuss together the need for  1-to-1 treatment or whether a group setting may be more effective. A group setting can be helpful for patients to see other people with the same condition and our Exercise Classes and Educational Seminars are well rated by our patients.

Senior Physiotherapist

Physiotherapy is defined as “the profession that is designed to optimise human movement, performance and function”. Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability to keep moving through exercise, movement, manual therapy, education and advice. A Senior Physiotherapist will have practiced for a number of years, completed a degree in Physiotherapy and also met standards set out under British law and regulated by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Senior physiotherapists specialise in disorders of the musculoskeletal system. They have developed the skills required to design your exercise programme, offer appropriate manual therapy and in some cases, electrotherapy or acupuncture may be offered.

FAQs

What does ‘musculoskeletal’ mean?

The term ‘musculoskeletal’ (often shortened to MSK) refers to the body’s joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves and any other structures that support the limbs, neck and back. You have been referred to the service because of an injury to one of these areas.

Why have I been referred to Connect and not the NHS?

In your area, Connect has been contracted to provide the MSK service on behalf of the NHS. It is an NHS service, completely free at the point of entry like all NHS services.

Our service brings together a range of specialist MSK clinicians to assess, diagnose and manage your condition within your local community.

What should I expect from my appointment?

Depending on your condition, your first appointment may be a scheduled telephone consultation with a physiotherapist or a face to face appointment. At the initial appointment you will be asked questions regarding your symptoms, activities, work, previous medical history etc.

If this is over the phone you may then be booked to see a physiotherapist, an Advanced Practitioner Physiotherapist (APP), a clinician with specialist orthopaedic or pain expertise or a GP with Special Interest (GPwSI).  This is to complete the assessment and decide on the best management plan for you.

Your treatment plan will be discussed with you and may include a variety of  treatment options, to help you to return to your usual activities. Your treatment plan will also include advice and specific exercises to help you to self-manage your condition.

What if I have special requirements?

  • Patients under 18: If the Patient is under 18, then please advise us when you book their appointment, as some of our services may only be available to Adults.
  • Patients with additional needs: If the Patient is vulnerable, or has a disability, or mobility problems, then please advise us when you book their appointment.
  • Transport: If you require hospital transport, please advise us when you book your appointment. Please note that transportation is not provided with some Hospitals.
  • Translation Support: If you require a translator, please advise us which language you require when you book your appointment.

What should I wear?

During your assessment you might be required to carry out a number of movements to determine the cause of your pain. Therefore we recommend you wear suitable loose fitting clothing, such as t-shirt, shorts, jogging bottoms and underwear that you are comfortable being assessed in.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Please bring to the appointment any recent prescriptions and/or a list of current medications.

What if I need Diagnostic Tests?

  • During your treatment, you may be referred for Diagnostic tests such as Blood-Samples, X-Ray, CT-Scans, MRI Scans etc.
  • You may be required to attend a walk-in clinic, or we may request the test for you.
  • Diagnostic tests may take up to 8 weeks to receive the results
  • We monitor your progress throughout the diagnostic process, so there is no need to call us earlier than 8 Weeks after you have attended your appointment.
