Pearson Engineering improve office wellbeing with Connect

Pearson Engineering, specialists in defense and security engineering, enlisted Connect Health to assist in improving workplace ergonomics, increase employee knowledge and understanding of musculoskeletal conditions.

A positive, healthy and safe working environment can have a big impact on the health and wellbeing, as well as productivity.

With 70, mainly office based employees at their head office in Newcastle upon Tyne, Pearson Engineering asked Connect to review a nominated number of employees’ workstations, assessing any individual requirements as well as any within the general office environment.

Connect’s assessment services typically follow a continuous improvement process. The aim of this process is to ensure the correct assessment is carried out and any intervention is then delivered based on the needs of the organisation and individual.

This improvement process was implemented at Pearson Engineering, with each individual assessed using the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) checklist published in 2013, to complete a DSE risk assessment and ensure compliance with the Schedule to the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 as amended by the Health and Safety Regulations 2002.

Twenty-four DSE assessments were undertaken over 3.5 days and were made up of a mixture of male and female employees across various departments.

Following the assessments, Connect were able to make the following recommendations to Pearson Engineering, with the aim of improving health and wellbeing of their employees:

  • Increasing the height of some desks to align with HSE requirements
  • Replace some chairs for individuals
  • Health and musculoskeletal screening assessments
  • Lunchtime/toolbox talks, general wellbeing initiates and advice posters to promote better health at work.

By considering the above recommendations, and with relevant individual postural education, Pearson Engineering employees will not only meet required regulations but should see improvements in:

  • Employee health and wellbeing
  • Employee engagement
  • Increased productivity
  • Reduced sickness absence.
