The event took place at Newcastle Racecourse and began with speeches from our Senior Management team, who discussed the yearly performance and targets for next 5 years. Employees were then lead to the sunny grounds of the racecourse for the fun to begin!
This year’s theme was Crystal Maze, and saw teams take on mental and physical challenges in the Industrial, Aztec, Futuristic and Medieval zones to collect crystals for precious seconds in the Crystal Dome. Employees were split into 14 teams and with Senior Management’s team, Alice in Wonderland, on everyone’s target list to beat, the afternoon of activities commenced. With 7 challenges to get through, including mine fields, wooden skis and a (very challenging) Sudoku board, the activities tested both mental and physical agility and, of course, the power of team work.
After 4 of the 8 exhausting but enjoyable challenges were completed, a break was taken to announce the Employee of the Year; an award given to employees who have excelled in their day to day roles. Nominated by internal staff, this year’s winners were Richard Pell and David Tait, who were both awarded £150 having shown good leadership and commitment to their role. With the competition so tight, a runners up prize of £50 and a bottle of bubbly was also award to Caitlin Ferguson who has gone above and beyond in her role as a team leader. Our internal Fantasy Football Team winner was also announced, with Data Analyst Graham Baldwin taking the gold football trophy. Courtesy of Medical Director Graeme Wilkes, this year’s ‘wooden spoon’ booby prize went to Connect’s Finance Director, Damian Stevenson, with his team coming out bottom of the league table.
With the remainder of the games completed in the second part of the afternoon, what started out as 14 teams was whittled down to just 3; Made in Chelsea, Miracle Workers and Collateral Damage. With their designated times, each of the three teams entered the Crystal Dome to fight for gold (tokens). With a closely fought battle and a valiant effort from all teams, Collateral Damage were crowned victorious and awarded gold medals and a bottle of champagne to celebrate their win. The day ended with a BBQ and drinks at Newcastle Racecourse, provided by Connect and enjoyed by all members of staff.
The annual away day provides an opportunity for staff to come together and socialise as a team, and is just one of the ways Connect reward staff for their continued hard work. Our employee of the year award, cycle to work scheme, online discounts, nursery vouchers and employee assistance programme are just a few of the benefits offered to staff when they join the company.
Here are just a few things staff members had to say about this year’s Away Day:
“Team building exercises were excellent, really seemed to bring people together.”
“The activities were fun and involved the ability to work as a team which I feel is a very important aspect of the away day. The food was also very good, as was the location.”
“The Away Day was amazing! Crystal Maze ticket gathering was certainly the highlight”
